On Thursday (Oct. 26), Sam Smith shared a new ballad called “Burning” that he says is his favorite track off his upcoming album, The Thrill of It All.
“It’s the most personal song I’ve ever written in my life,” he said during an appearance on BBC Radio. “I was going through a really tough time last year.
I live in London, and I went through a breakup. And I dealt with the breakup in a bad way, and I was just going out way too much.”
The piano-driven torch song is about the aftermath of losing a lover. The minimalist production places the spotlight on Smith’s emotive vocals, expressing the longing of lyrics like, “I’ve been burning since you left.”
Smith said that music is his therapy, but it took him six weeks to get to the studio after the breakup. “I let everything go in that song,” Smith said.
“And that song to me is about fame as well and the responsibilities I felt and the pressure and my relationship with my voice and how I was a bit rebellious last year.
… It’s about self-destruction, that song.” The Thrill of It All will be released on Nov. 3.
